Dona Florinda Flores, aka .Big Mama. and .Mama Tara. in Moskito was born in Plapaya, Honduras in 1931. She learned English from her English father and Moskito mother. At the age of thirteen, her mother died. Her father left for Nicaragua. This left her brothers and sisters to try to care for her. She says they did not want her.
Sometime later, she married and had three children. After her first husband died, she was visited by a missionary who told her about God and the Bible. The missionary also told her that she needed to educate her children so that they could obtain good jobs like teachers.
Around that time, a prophet also visited her and told her that God wanted her to move to Puerto Lempira, Honduras to earn enough money to educate her children and to do the work that God wanted her to do. However, she did not have any money or any way to care for her children. The prophet gave her some money and she also found a woman to care for her children while she
relocated.
Dona Florinda moved to Puerto Lempira in 1962. There she immediately began to sell merchandise to earn an income. Over time, God grew the business and she was able to start helping the poor in the area . if they needed food, clothing or shelter, she would
give what she could. God continued to bless her with additional money.
God also provided her with another husband, as had also told her previously. After
they were married, she sent for her children. She had a total of eight children and as the prophet stated, God enabled all of them to be well educated.
During this time, she also became an advocate for the rights of the Moskito
Indians. At this point in history, they were being abused by the Army. For example, sometimes young Moskito Indian girls were picked up, abused and threatened with more violence if they reported the abuse.
Dona Florinda was not afraid and often went to the Colonel to fight for a solution
to the problems. This also included writing letters to the President of Honduras.
Because of her diligence in working for the Moskito Indians, they rewarded her by
voting her into the Governor position of the Department (ie, State) of Gracias A
Dios two times.
She has lived her life by listening and obeying God’s direction. To this day, she
is still an advocate for the Moskito Indians and is still providing them with shelter, clothing and food as God leads her.
Dona Florinda had these words to share. I now helping children that don’t have mother. I read my Bible and pray every night. I working with God. He like what I’m doing. All of us is working for God. We are doing what God likes.. .All of us is working for God. We are doing what God likes..
